# Your Shopify Checkout Is Losing You 70% of Your Sales. Here's What to Fix.

Industry benchmarks put checkout abandonment near 70%. Most of it is fixable friction. Here is why customers leave and what to change on standard Shopify and Plus.

Industry benchmarks put checkout abandonment near 70%. That means for every ten customers who start your checkout process, roughly seven leave without completing the purchase. They wanted your product enough to add it to their cart and begin entering their information, and something stopped them.

For a Shopify brand doing $5M in annual revenue, a 10-percentage-point improvement in checkout completion could represent $500K to $700K in recovered revenue. Not new traffic. Not new customers. Revenue from people who already decided to buy and were lost at the last step.

Most Shopify brands accept their checkout abandonment rate as an inevitability. It’s not. The majority of checkout drop-offs are caused by fixable friction, and the fixes range from configuration changes to Shopify Plus checkout customization.

## Why Customers Abandon Checkout

After analyzing checkout behavior across dozens of Shopify stores, the reasons are consistent.

**Unexpected costs.** Shipping, taxes and fees that appear for the first time at checkout are the single biggest driver of abandonment. The customer’s mental price was the product price. When the total jumps by $12 to $15 for shipping, the value equation changes. This is especially acute for international customers who may see duties and taxes they weren’t expecting.

**Friction in the form.** Every field the customer has to fill out is an opportunity to drop off. Auto-fill not working, requiring account creation, asking for information that doesn’t feel necessary, or a mobile keyboard that doesn’t switch to numeric for the zip code field: these micro-frictions compound.

**Payment options.** If the customer’s preferred payment method isn’t available, they may abandon rather than retrieve a different card. Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and buy-now-pay-later options (Afterpay, Klarna) each reduce a specific type of payment friction.

**Trust deficit.** For first-time customers especially, the checkout is the moment of maximum risk perception. They’re about to hand over their payment information. If the checkout doesn’t feel secure, professional and trustworthy, hesitation wins.

**Shipping timeline uncertainty.** “When will I get this?” is a question many checkouts don’t answer clearly. If delivery estimates are vague or absent, customers who need the product by a specific date may bail rather than risk a late delivery.

## The Fixes

### Standard Shopify (Available to All Plans)

**Show shipping costs early.** Use Shopify’s shipping calculator on the cart page so customers see their shipping cost before they enter checkout. Better yet, build free shipping into your pricing and communicate it prominently. “Free shipping on all orders” eliminates the cost surprise entirely.

**Enable accelerated checkout.** Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay are one-tap payment options that reduce the checkout to a single step for returning customers. Shop Pay alone has been shown to increase checkout conversion significantly compared to guest checkout.

**Minimize form fields.** Use Shopify’s single-page checkout. Enable address auto-complete. Don’t require account creation; offer it as an option after purchase. Every field you remove increases completion probability.

**Add trust signals.** Payment method icons, secure checkout badges and a clear return policy visible from the checkout. These seem small, but they measurably impact first-time buyer conversion.

### Shopify Plus (Checkout Extensibility)

**Post-purchase upsells.** After the customer completes payment but before the thank-you page, present a one-click upsell or cross-sell. This doesn’t add friction to the purchase, because the order is already placed, but it increases AOV for a percentage of buyers. (We go deeper in Shopify Plus post-purchase upsells.)

**Custom checkout fields.** Gift messaging, delivery instructions, loyalty point redemption, subscription enrollment: Plus lets you add custom functionality to the checkout without third-party apps that slow the page.

**Dynamic shipping and payment logic.** Show or hide payment methods based on cart value, customer location or product type. Offer free expedited shipping for orders above a threshold. These conditional rules are only possible with Plus checkout customization.

**Checkout branding.** On standard Shopify, checkout branding options are limited. Plus allows more extensive customization, including custom fonts, colors and layout adjustments that make the checkout feel like a seamless extension of your brand rather than a generic Shopify form.

## The Cart Recovery System

For the customers who do abandon, a multi-channel recovery system captures revenue that would otherwise be lost permanently.

**Email:** First recovery email at 1 hour (highest recovery rate). Second at 24 hours with social proof or product benefits. Third at 48 to 72 hours with a small incentive if appropriate for the brand. Include the abandoned products with images and a direct link back to checkout.

**SMS:** A single SMS at 1 to 2 hours for subscribers. SMS recovery rates are often higher than email because of immediacy and open rates.

**Push notifications:** For brands with a mobile app or web push subscribers, a reminder notification at 2 to 4 hours.

The combined recovery rate from a well-built multi-channel system is typically 10 to 15% of abandoned checkouts, which translates directly to recovered revenue.
